The role of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry in the implementation of the Paris Agreement
In the framework of its Strategic Plan 2015-2021, and more specifically, the strategic line of collaboration and international cooperation, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Services of the region Tanger Tétouan Al Hoceima (CCISTA), Morocco, with the support of the State Secretariat for Sustainable Development of the Kingdom of Morocco and the support of FMCCIS, ASCAME, AMCDD and OPEMHT, has organized a side event on the topic: “The role of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry in the implementation of the Paris Agreement”. The event took place in the Kingdom of Morocco Pavilion, Area E of the COP24 Conference in Katowice, Poland.
The event was moderated by Ms. Hajar KHAMLICHI, expert in environment and sustainable development and member of the Executive Board of the Observatory for the Protection of the Environment and the Historic Monuments of Tanger (OPEMHT), and of the Moroccan Alliance for the Climate and the Sustainable Development. This high level event counted on the participation of relevant experts: Mr. Rabie EL KHAMLICI, Regional Directors of CCISTA, Mr. Abdrrahim KSSIRI, Commission Chief at the Economic, Social and Environmental Council of Morocco (CESE), Mr. Arnault GRAVES, Senior Climate Counselor at the Union for the Mediterranean (UpM), Ms. Iliyana ARNAUDOVA, Senior Expert at the Regional Renewable Energies Center (RCREEE) and Mr. Ayman CHERKAOUI, Global Compact Executive Director, United Nations Development Programme (PNUD).
After the presentation of the participants, the debate was opened with representatives of the private sector and of NGOs.
Discussed issues
– Promotion of the actions of the Chambers of Commerce in the implementation of the Paris Agreement.
– Exploration of ways of collaboration between the involved actors.
– Development of dialogue and consultation platforms.
– Promotion of the commitment of the Chambers of Commerce regarding the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially objectives 11 and 13.
– Incorporation of the economic vision of the cities and their industrialized zones in the Action Programme for the Chambers.
– Promotion of the capacity of the enterprises to anticipate the challenge of the climate change with its opportunities for their various components.
– Promotion of the role of the private sector in the national priorities of climate change. The inseparable link between the fight against climate change and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals was highlighted.
– Articulation of the role of the private sector with scientific research and the promotion of business creation and Start ups.
In conclusion, the participants welcomed this pioneering initiative of CCISTA, and they agreed to meet again to talk about concrete ideas and actions.
