The Association of the Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCAME) Executive Committee was held on July 8th in Barcelona, under the presidency of Mr. Ahmed M. El Wakil, and with the participation of most of its members.

The meeting dealt with the key socio-economic issues that affect the chambers of commerce of the region and the members present took a series of decisions regarding the present and the future of ASCAME. It was in this framework that there was a unanimous agreement on a one-year extension of Mr. Ahmed M. El Wakil’s presidency, as a good part of his second term took place during the COVID-19 global lockdown. Therefore, he will hold the position until the end of 2022, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of the House of Alexandria and the 40th anniversary of ASCAME.

Moreover, attendees were testimony of a major moment in the history of ASCAME: the Committee welcomed Ms. Mònica Roca i Aparici as the new President of the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and as the first woman to hold ASCAME’s vice-presidency. ASCAME’s General Coordinator, Mr. Anwar Zibaoui, expressed his hope that this will become a normal occurrence, with the incorporation of more businesswomen to the presidencies of the Mediterranean chambers.

Other relevant decisions included the approval of the 2020 accounts and of the 2021 budget, as well as the reactivation of ASCAME’s Working Commissions. Finally, a follow-up on ASCAME 2018-2022 Strategic Plan exposed its successes: the launch of the MedaMeetings, the participation of more than 25.000 companies on the different events organised by ASCAME and its partners, and the development of international cooperation projects with a global value of 69 million euros, among others. These initiatives keep strengthening the partnership between all members and suggest a promising future for the Mediterranean region.
