ASCAME presented in a round table the declaration in order to safeguard and promote the Mediterranean diet, emphasizing the networking of the private sector and chambers as strategic keys for this promotion. The dissemination of the Mediterranean diet has positive impacts on the environment and the health and is also considered as a good business opportunity.
Another main point that was presented during the round table was the importance of the MedDiet project and its promotion of the Mediterranean diet as a fundamental piece for the promotion of the tourism industry which represents the first sector in the Mediterranean. The recent recognition from the UNESCO of the Mediterranean diet as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, initiative supported by the European Commission and some other European and Mediterranean countries, proves that the Mediterranean diet is no longer only understood as a way of feeding but also as a key factor in favour of the integration and the economic and social development for the region, factor which is in line with the main objective of the MedDiet project.
