Barcelona, 04 April 2016 – The logistics and transport sectors are experiencing a radical transformation, with new actors and regional powers emerging as international centres of distribution. The Mediterranean countries enjoy a privileged position in the international logistics market for the economic competitiveness of the region. Logistics is today a strategic economic revitalizing for the Mediterranean, and the region counts with strong commercial relations with markets such as Europe, the Gulf or Latin America, and in diverse industries, from the maritime transport up to the aviation.

For years now, the Mediterranean has attracted increasing investments of Chinese companies on the construction of modern logistic infrastructures, transport and maritime areas. The Mediterranean is the most rapid and direct maritime route that connects Europe, through the channel of Suez that Egypt already decided to extend, with the Indian Ocean and the emergent countries of Asia. The Mediterranean is a sea of three continents and a strategical hub for Europe-Asia- Africa trade. The main ports of the Mediterranean prepare themselves to increase their activity and to be positioned as logistic and commercial point of reference worldwide, offering the opportunity to build bridges from Barcelona, where the Mediterranean begins, with the rest of the world: Suez, Panama, China, etc. The Mediterranean, in terms of business, trade and economic ties, presents with regions such as Latin America complementarities than competitive interests to be exploited.
In this scenario, Barcelona will host once again the International Logistics and Material Handling Exhibition for Trade visitors (SIL 2016), during which the Association of the Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCAME), together with the Consorci de la Zona Franca de Barcelona and the support of the Chamber of Trade Industry and Navigation of Barcelona, will organize the 14th Mediterranean Logistics and Transport Summit and 9th Mediterranean Ports Summit. Both meetings will bring together managerial international leaders, high executives and thousands of companies of the logistics and the transport sectors of the Mediterranean, Latin America and the Gulf to promote commercial contacts at regional and international level and synergies among the current logistic projects.
Algeria, special guest
The forum will also give special attention to Algeria, as an invited country, and will put on the table key issues such as the need of a major integration of the infrastructures of the sector, a better interconnection between the north and the south of the region, and the implementation of multimodal corridors. For example, taking advantage of the potential of the aviation sector and that of ports of the region for a major commercial efficiency.
The cooperation in logistics must be a priority for the Mediterranean countries, from the management of the capital and common equipment, up to the strengthening of the structure and regional identity, as a fundamental base to reach a full economic integration of the region.
At the same time, the commercial exchange has to be favoured between the region and the rest of the world, “Building bridges” as this year Summit edition’s motto claims, and where companies of the sector will find more opportunities than risks.
