İzmir, whose history dates back 8.500 years, is Turkey's 3rd largest city with a population of 4.3 million and is the 2nd largest commercial center. The textile and its sub-sectors serve as the locomotives for the city’s economy with employment, high export volume, domestic and foreign investments. The wedding dress has a privileged place among the textile-related sectors in İzmir with a capacity to meet 70 % of the total wedding dress production across Turkey. Therefore, it would be undoubtedly right to call İzmir as “the bridal capital” of the country. İzmir also attaches great importance to the studies regarding the technical textiles. Several companies carry out activities for the development of technical textile sector, new products and implementation of innovative projects required by the industry. Moreover, İzmir has the experience and capability of sectoral clustering with a great synergy between the institutions, companies, universities and R&D centers. There are many examples of clusters in relation to the textile and garment in İzmir.
