Barcelona, April 24, 2018 – The Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry (ASCAME) supported the first EU-Egypt Sustainable Energy Forum, which took place in Cairo last 23 April. The Forum counted with the presence of the ASCAME President, Ahmed El Wakil, the EU Commissioner for Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete, the Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, Tarek El-Molla, and the Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker El-Markaber. The meeting’s discussions focused on Egypt’s future as an energy hub and its potential to boost renewable energy and energy efficiency.

As addressed during the Forum, the EU is keen to support Egypt and others Mediterranean countries with sharing of experience, financial and technical assistance in their field of clean energy transition, as well as with the mobilization of international finance. The EU reaffirmed the need to not only public funds but in particular private investment to accelerate the Egyptian and Mediterranean energy transition in order to scale up renewable and efficiency investment and modernize the gas sector.

In order to help diversify Europe’s energy suppliers and routes, the EU is actively engaged in an energy dialogue at political level with North African and Eastern Mediterranean partners, in particular with Egypt.
